Sofia

Mixed Breed · Female

Sofia is an extraordinary female dog – gentle, sensitive and very frightened. Her entire life so far has been away from people. For many years she wandered alone in the fields, not knowing the warmth of home or human care. It's no surprise then that she keeps her distance and doesn't allow anyone to approach her - the world of humans is foreign to her, and direct contact still causes fear in her. Nevertheless, there is great potential in her and small steps towards change. The biggest progress she has already made is that she happily stays in a group kennel with other dogs. It is they who give her courage and make her daily life not so sad. In the company of dogs, Sofia thrives - she feels more confident, can relax, and even show a little joy. Sofia is not yet looking for contact with humans. She needs time, patience and great support to trust and open her heart. This is not a dog that will immediately greet you wagging its tail - but in the right hands, with the help of an experienced and understanding caregiver, she has a chance for a dignified, peaceful life. Sofia needs a home that accepts her as she is now, and is ready to wait for her slow progress. It may be a long road, but each step forward will be more valuable than words can describe. We dream of Sofia finally experiencing safety and love - to feel that a human does not have to be a threat, but a friend for life.

PL·Show original

Mimo to widać w niej ogromny potencjał i maleńkie kroki ku zmianie. Potrzebuje czasu, cierpliwości i ogromnego wsparcia, by zaufać i otworzyć swoje serduszko.

About Sofia

What life with Sofia looks like

Sofia is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Czekadełko in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sofia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sofia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Czekadełko handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sofia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sofia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Czekadełko will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sofia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sofia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Czekadełko early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sofia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
