Adopt Spencer

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

Gender: male dog Date of birth: approx. 12/2022 Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier – mixed breed At the animal shelter since: 22.07.2023 Friendly, but insecure Not much known about her Experience with dogs required No children Proof of expertise required Spencer was abandoned together with his two brothers, Don and Terence, in Espelkamp and made themselves comfortable in a garden. All three were very insecure, but with plenty of liverwurst and delicious-smelling treats, they could be convinced that we weren’t so bad after all, and we were able to safely take them in. It’s now known that additional siblings from the same litter were also abandoned in the surrounding area—it seems an entire litter was simply left behind because they apparently wouldn’t sell. None of the three have experienced much so far, so they need to be gently introduced to everything new, just like puppies. They all get along very well with other dogs, although Spencer has shown within the trio that he wears the pants. Spencer is very friendly toward people, but we would only like to place him with experienced adults without children, as it has become clear at the animal shelter that he still requires a great deal of work. He reacts very sensitively to new situations and visual stimuli, such as light reflections. When triggered, he becomes unresponsive, performs somersaults on the leash, and is completely beside himself. His behavior isn’t aggressive, but it takes real effort to hold onto him, and you never quite know what might unsettle him next—even something as minor as the blinking lights on our walkie-talkies. This issue needs urgent attention, though it will certainly be a long and not entirely easy journey. For this reason, we see him best suited to a quiet, rural neighborhood where he won’t constantly be exposed to every possible stimulus. A garden where he can move around and relax freely would be ideal. Of the three, Spencer is the most insecure, yet always remains friendly—a little rough diamond with a big heart. We strongly recommend seeking support from a force-free dog training class right from the start. He won’t initially be suitable for regular group classes, as his challenges lie far beyond basic commands 🙂 Please note that Spencer, as an American Staffordshire Terrier – mixed breed, falls under Category 1 dogs, meaning specific husbandry requirements must be met in many German states. We’re happy to provide you with detailed information about these regulations. They are absolutely manageable and shouldn’t discourage you.

Paten

About Spencer

What life with Spencer looks like

Spencer is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Lübbecke in Lübbecke.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spencer, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spencer?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Lübbecke handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spencer on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spencer if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Lübbecke will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spencer already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spencer isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Lübbecke early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spencer and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
