Two cats who still want to live Despite everything, we encounter animals that make you wonder what they have been through. Willie and Vanessa are such cats. We took the two in a very desolate condition. From the beginning, we knew that a lot would come our way. Nevertheless, we consciously decided for them. Because we doubt that these two would have gotten a real chance anywhere. And exactly with such cats, we can't look away. On the contrary: Then we want to do everything to make them finally experience what a good cat life feels like. Today it's about Willie - our brave tailor Willie is estimated to be about ten years old. He has already endured so much: He had a broken jaw, whether it was an accident or someone stepped on him, we don't know. In any case, the jaw fracture was never treated and grew together crookedly. His left eye could no longer be saved and had to be surgically removed. In addition, Willie is FIV-positive, carries the cat AIDS virus. Despite everything, this little guy keeps fighting. Fortunately, his blood test doesn't look that bad. Willie has also already bravely survived a dental sanitation. But that was unfortunately not enough. Willie has severe otitis media on both sides. The left ear already had to be surgically opened. Pathologically changed tissue was removed. The operation was professionally performed under intubation anesthesia and CT control. We are still waiting for the histopathological results. As soon as Willie has recovered from this operation, the next big challenge is already waiting: The right ear must also be surgically treated. The clinic has thankfully calculated animal welfare prices. Nevertheless, the first bill alone amounts to 1,960 euros. In addition, 1,018 euros have already been incurred for dental sanitation, blood test and necessary preliminary examinations. Altogether, 2,978 euros have already been incurred - and Willie's treatment is not yet complete. We know that it's a lot of money. But for us, Willie is not just another bill. He is a living being that has pain. A cat that has managed to trust despite everything. A cat that wants to live. And he also has someone he is particularly attached to: Vanessa has also had a lot behind her. Vanessa is only just over a year old. An accident deformed her hind leg and was never treated. So far, no veterinarian has dared to repair it surgically. But we don't give up on her either. Because Vanessa and Willie are a very special team. They love life and are very attached to each other - and we would like to help them not only medically, but also give them the opportunity to lead a beautiful life together. We were incredibly lucky that their foster family will take them in forever. They are allowed to stay. They have a home. And they will also continue to be accompanied by their necessary veterinary treatments. In addition, the foster mother is a specialist. That's a small miracle for us. Now we just need people who help us make this miracle possible financially. Because Willie and Vanessa don't want miracles. They don't want pity. They just want what every animal deserves: a home, security, love and a life without pain. If you share our opinion that cats with a difficult past, health problems or a poor prognosis also deserve a chance, please help us. Every donation - no matter how big or small - helps us pay for Willie's treatments and soon also enable Vanessa the necessary medical care. And if you can't give anything yourself: Please share our appeal. Maybe it reaches exactly the people who can help Willie. Christa Becker, or E-Mail to:

About Spendenaufruf

What life with Spendenaufruf looks like

Spendenaufruf is a large adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutzverein Erkrath e.V. in Haan.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spendenaufruf, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spendenaufruf?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Erkrath e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spendenaufruf on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spendenaufruf if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Erkrath e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spendenaufruf already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spendenaufruf isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Erkrath e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spendenaufruf and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
