Adopt Spike

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Young · 3 years

Since: 26.06.2025 Spike was taken by the veterinary office and came to us at the animal shelter. Unfortunately, we do not know much about his past. His previous owner had him only for a short time, and before that he was probably passed around among several people. He did not easily cope with this. Spike still needs to learn that humans can provide orientation and guidance, and that he does not have to decide or be allowed to do everything on his own. This becomes clear in daily life: Spike likes to jump up on people and pull them on the leash where he wants to go. Although this is not particularly funny given his size and build, no one has ever explained to him before that this is not desired. He now has an idea of what behavior we expect from him. He has internalized that rules in living with humans create a framework and offer him security. We unfortunately do not know why Spike only has one eye. In the daily routine of the shelter, it does not bother him, and it is hardly noticeable when dealing with him. Spike loves long walks and enjoys going to the beach. He handles car rides calmly. He wears his muzzle without problems, and he behaves impeccably during veterinary examinations. As soon as his trusted people leave his field of vision, he whines a lot. Therefore, we assume that he cannot be left alone. Spike quickly sees small dogs as prey in direct contact, so he will not be rehomed to a household with small dogs, cats, other small animals, or children. How he behaves towards other animals of similar size is currently being tested. Anyone who would like to work on Spike's projects together will be rewarded with an incredible great and loyal companion.

03841 - 79 01 79

About Spike

What life with Spike looks like

Spike is a young adult american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spike, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spike?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spike on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spike if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spike already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spike isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spike and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
