Split

European Shorthair · Male · Senior · 16 years

Characteristics: Unfortunately, we do not know what Split has already endured in its previous life. It was callously left in a transport box in front of a restaurant and simply left to its fate. This is why it initially did not react particularly friendly. Additionally, it turned out that it has a thyroid condition and requires medication. At first, Split preferred to have its own space and keep a distance. Now, however, it is very clingy and tries to establish contact with its trusted people. The problem here is that its mood directly shifts when actively touched (intentionally or unintentionally), and it begins to attack and bite. Therefore, Split definitely needs people with experience in caring for "special cats." In any case, it should be a quiet household without children. The handsome tomcat does not like other cats at all and is therefore looking for a place of its own. Split would like to be rehomed in a home with a free roam and a warm hiding spot in a barn. Split will be rehomed with a care agreement, so that the costs for the medication it requires will continue to be covered by the animal shelter. This cat needs outdoor access.

About Split

What life with Split looks like

Split is a senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Kaiserslautern in Germany.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Split, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Split?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Kaiserslautern handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Split on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Split if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Kaiserslautern will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Split already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Split isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Kaiserslautern early rather than rehoming privately; they know Split and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
