Adopt Spocky

Male · Senior · 15 years

To properly describe our very special Spocky, we start with the most important traits. These are the ones that people need to be suitable for a mutually satisfying coexistence with the small but self-assured male dogs. Patience, consistency, experience, and ultimately, a sense of humor. Patience is particularly important at the beginning. Mr. Spock opens his heart slowly to everyone. He lived with an older person where he received little education but many freedoms. There was little contact with the Westi-Mix by other people, but the dog-human relationship had to be close and loving. Spocky bonds exceptionally strongly with trusted people, then it truly becomes a cuddler and snuggler. But this trust must be earned by every new person who enters its life. Consistent action, setting boundaries, and continued patience are important for this. Spocky is not a fear biter; he knows exactly what he wants. For that reason, he can also look cute and cuddly with strangers when they have a treat in their hand. What he doesn't want to do, he knows as well, and that would be to be touched by the same strangers. Then he would bite without hesitation, and he is not particularly delicate about it. For vet visits, home visits by strangers, public transportation, or similar, muzzle training has already been completed. Despite initial strong resistance, the little pincher has proven to be very trainable and works well when acted upon calmly but firmly. Hectic and uncertainty are not good conditions to try to convince Spocky of something he may not immediately consider beneficial. If one can demonstrate a longer breath than Spocky, he shows a certain understanding of our concerns. Then he shows his very, very lovable side, which can lead to forgetting all consequences. For the little daredevil knows how to use his charm just as well as his teeth. Experience in dealing with strong-willed dogs would be helpful to properly assess Spocky and find the right measure. Humor is therefore necessary because after the initial consistent adherence to the rules, a few missteps can be forgiven with a smile. Fellow animals, cats, and children do not want to have contact with Spocky. Additionally, Spocky has an enlarged heart and takes two heart tablets daily. About Spocky

What life with Spocky looks like

Spocky is a small senior dog waiting at Tierheim Hannover in Hannover.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Enlarged heart requiring twice daily heart medication. Requires muzzle training for vet visits and strangers. Not suitable with children, other dogs, or cats.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spocky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spocky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hannover handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spocky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spocky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hannover will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spocky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spocky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hannover early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spocky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
