Struwel

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Struwel, a small terrier mix, was abandoned at the shelter and left to fend for himself. It's hard for a dog to understand why the people he trusted would suddenly reject him. What remains is a small male who doesn't understand the world and whose sad eyes reveal how much this experience has affected him. Struwel, born July 14, 2018, and about 45 cm tall, is shy and reserved. However, his reserve is not due to unfriendliness. On the contrary, Struwel is not a dog who goes out and makes demands. He simply needs time to gain trust. People who have been disappointed by others don't learn to approach them carefree overnight. His unkempt, already somewhat matted fur also suggests that no one has really cared for him for a long time. Dogs with such fur need regular grooming. Once the fur is matted, it often offers less protection against cold and wet. It would be all the more important that Struwel leaves soon. Unfortunately, shelters often lack the time to address each individual dog and its individual needs. Sensitive souls like Struwel suffer particularly from this. We are firmly convinced that this little guy has a big heart that is just waiting to gain trust again. With love, patience, and affection, Struwel will certainly quickly realize that not all people will disappoint him. Struwel gets along with other dogs. We are looking for an experienced foster home or a loving home with people who give him the time he needs. People who don't expect anything from him, but let him come at his own pace. A quiet environment and understanding people would help him to gradually lay aside his uncertainty. We very much hope that someone behind the shaggy fur and the cautious nature recognizes the wonderful dog that Struwel is. A dog who didn't give up and who more than deserves to finally arrive, be loved, and never be abandoned again. Struwel is neutered and will be vaccinated, chipped, and after a positive pre-check, will be placed with a "Vierbeiner in Not" protection contract. General note on our protégés: Our dogs in Romania are regularly visited so we can always re-evaluate their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us very much to convey a possible good picture of each individual dog. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that a dog in a new environment - with new people, new routines, and new impressions - can also show himself differently. This is normal and is part of every change process. Many dogs open up faster at home and show sides that were not visible in the shelter. Our assessments are based on current observations, but are not a guarantee for every behavior in the new environment. They are intended to provide orientation and show how the dog presents himself in the shelter - and what potential he has. We are convinced: With patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find his way and develop positively.

About Struwel

What life with Struwel looks like

Struwel is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Struwel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Struwel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Struwel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Struwel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Struwel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Struwel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Struwel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
