Stute Sierra

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

The ca. 1983 born Stute Sierra has lived on our farm since August 2009. Sierra was considered a "problem horse" because she eventually refused to be ridden. She was sold, and her new owner managed to rebuild Sierra’s trust in humans. After Sierra’s horse friend passed away, she stood alone on a pasture. Her owner searched for a place where she could live with other horses again. Sierra became the lead mare of our small horse herd. A great love blossomed between her and Ravelle, and of course, they shared a stall. Unfortunately, Ravelle had to be euthanized on March 15, 2015. Since Sierra suffers from founder, she cannot graze with Remus during the spring and summer months – the fresh grass would worsen her condition. She mostly stays on the sandy area adjacent to the pasture, so she can keep an eye on her "boys." On April 20, 2018, we found Sierra lying in the stable in the morning, showing signs of colic. We led her around until the vet arrived. The vet administered a muscle relaxant and listened to her abdomen. No intestinal sounds were heard. Sierra’s pulse was significantly accelerated, and her circulation was in danger. She received an infusion to stabilize her circulation. Within a short time, it became clear that the treatment was not successful, and her pulse continued to accelerate, with no intestinal sounds still audible. We could only do one thing for our old lady: let her go with dignity. We will never forget you, Sierra, and hope you see your great love Ravelle and the pony Max in the rainbow land again.

About Stute Sierra

What life with Stute Sierra looks like

Stute Sierra is a small adult mixed breed horse waiting at Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. in Irmenach.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Stute Sierra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Stute Sierra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Stute Sierra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Stute Sierra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Stute Sierra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Stute Sierra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Stute Sierra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
