Adopt Sweety

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 3 months

Sweety Lionheart Milan found the two elderly ladies, Sweety and Ayla, in the village when he went shopping. Both appeared disoriented and were walking around on the street. Ayla had a microchip and was registered with the city. Sweety was not microchipped. We have now found out that the two lived with a confused woman who kept them locked in a shed. This also explains their really poor condition. Both Ayla and especially Sweety were in very poor health. You can find more about Ayla on her own profile. Sweety was very upset, which can be seen well in the first video. She had very little fur, incredibly long claws, and was dehydrated. X-rays showed that her heart was enlarged and her lungs were already affected. A test confirmed the suspicion of heartworms. Sweety has been under treatment since she came to the shelter. The heartworm treatment is relatively straightforward but very time-consuming due to the life cycles of the worms. Especially with a heavy infestation, care must be taken. Sweety is breathing somewhat heavily and her liver values were a catastrophe, but they are slowly improving. Her fur is now wonderful. As for Sweety herself: she is a real personality. She is small but can become "bristly" when other dogs annoy her. In general, she gets along very well with other dogs, as seen in the videos. She is incredibly kind and affectionate towards people. Therefore, she would be very suitable for older people looking for a small single dog, or for people who want to give an old and sick female dog a beautiful time. Contact us ❤️🐾Info: What does it mean that the dog is not yet ready for adoption? Our dogs are regularly vaccinated according to regulations. Rabies vaccination is done annually in Serbia. To bring dogs from Serbia, which is now a listed third country, into the EU, they need a corresponding rabies titer. This measures whether there are enough antibodies against rabies in the blood. For Serbia, the titer certificate must be at least 3 months old upon entry into the EU. Since titers are quite expensive, not all dogs have the certificate, but it is only done when needed. If a dog is adopted, it can take up to 3 months before it is ready for adoption. Blood is taken from the dog and sent to the lab. This is also the reason why our dogs are at the earliest available for adoption or ready for travel at 8 months old.

About Sweety

What life with Sweety looks like

Sweety is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad in Aachen.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sweety, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sweety?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sweety on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sweety if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sweety already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sweety isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sweety and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
