Syd

Greyhound Β· Male Β· Young Β· 3 years

Meet Syd, racing name Grovenor Big Lad, who is just 3 Yrs old (DOB 04/11/2023). Syd had a short racing career, showing that it wasn't really his thing and preferring to put his paws up at an early age. He is a strikingly handsome brindle boy, tall and elegant and lots of fun. He loves a fuss, travels well in the van and enjoys his walks. He is currently a little strong on the lead but is responding to some training. He's a bit of a oaf in the paddock and loves to chuck the toys around and chase a football - he is after all only a young lad with a sense of fun. He has so far been fine with other dogs that we have meet and is happy to say hello and walk with them. He does like chasing squirrels so probably isn't going to be cat friendly. Syd is currently with us from South West Wales Greyhound Trust for some additional assessment. He has been in a home on foster and demonstrated what we think are some guarding issues. He forms a strong bond and can guard his preferred human, especially around bed time which resulted in him being returned. He can be reluctant to part with his toys although once he's dropped them at your feet you are able to pick them up. He will need an adult only home, possibly with a single owner and someone who has experience of his kind of behaviour. We will not put him in a home with children or to anyone who has never had a dog before. With the right person and some training we hope he can transition into a loving pet. He can be left for a short period but if he can hear you he will whine. We would suggest he would suit being crate or "bed trained" so that can becomes his place rather than being allowed on the sofa or human bed. Syd may not stay with us and in time will likely return to South West Wales if we don't find him a home. if you are interested in him do get in touch. He is such a young lad that we'd hate to see stay in kennels for an extended length of time.

About Syd

What life with Syd looks like

Syd is a large young adult greyhound dog waiting at Greyhound Trust Shropshire and Borders in United Kingdom.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible β€” a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Syd, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Syd?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Greyhound Trust Shropshire and Borders handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Syd on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Syd if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Greyhound Trust Shropshire and Borders will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Syd already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Syd isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Greyhound Trust Shropshire and Borders early rather than rehoming privately; they know Syd and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
