Teddy

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

Teddy, formerly Samuel (born 08/2015), has developed tremendously over the past few months. This gentle, calm older male came from Romania with significant overweight (originally 27 kg) and a severe cough. Both have improved considerably: Teddy has lost a good amount of weight (now approx. 20 kg) and has a nice figure. A mild chronic cough is expected to remain. His slightly curved back should also be monitored, as he occasionally experiences pain. On most days, however, Teddy is pain-free. Climbing stairs is not particularly easy for him, so his future home should ideally be on a single level. Teddy is a sweet and rather laid-back companion who really enjoys walks. These can take a while, though he prefers to go at his own relaxed pace. Playing, on the other hand, is not one of his passions. So far, neither other dogs nor balls, plush toys, or other toys have been able to excite him. Instead, Teddy is increasingly discovering the joy of affection. He now comes to people on his own, for example resting his head on a thigh and asking to be petted. At the same time, it is important to read his body language well: when he no longer likes a touch or a situation, he shows this by baring his teeth. His boundary must then be respected and the contact stopped immediately. For this reason, Teddy is not a dog for beginners. Restraining and lifting him remain difficult for him. Pulling on his collar or harness can also trigger a strong stress reaction. He has already made progress here, but he still needs careful guidance. Good management is also important when it comes to food. Teddy is very food-motivated and can become pushy, jumping up and snapping at hands. He will not let food be taken away and, if necessary, would defend his resource with his teeth. Teddy generally gets along well with other dogs. With females there are usually no problems; with males, it depends on chemistry. He does not like unneutered males. As a single dog or second dog he is conceivable, although, as described above, he does not want to play with other dogs. Children from about 12 years of age would be possible, provided they are sensible and can reliably respect Teddy's boundaries. Teddy now walks very well on the leash and responds to his name. He is also managing being left alone. Car travel is no problem for him once he is inside the car. Getting in still needs to be practiced carefully; where necessary, muzzle training is used. Clear progress is visible here as well. For Teddy, we are looking for a calm, preferably single-level home with a small garden, and people with dog experience who can read body language reliably and respect his boundaries. He does not need action or a big activity program, but people who enjoy relaxed walks and an easygoing everyday life together. At the same time, one should be ready to patiently accompany him on his further journey. In just a few months Teddy has learned an incredible amount and shown that there is still a great deal of potential within him. He is only just beginning to discover how wonderful a life in safety can be, and is increasingly coming to enjoy it. Teddy is vaccinated, microchipped, and will be placed with a protection contract after a positive pre-screening. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. provides only placement assistance in Teddy's case. DE·Show original

Teddy, ehemals Samuel, (geb. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. leistet im Fall Teddy lediglich Vermittlungshilfe. About Teddy

What life with Teddy looks like

Teddy is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Teddy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Teddy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Teddy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Teddy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Teddy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Teddy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Teddy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
