Thor

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

Thor celebrates his second Easter in 2024, and for this festival of hope and new beginnings, he wishes for a family that deserves a wonderful dog like our Weimaraner newcomer. Thor came to his former owners as a few-week-old puppy, completely blue-eyed, and a purebred specimen, preferably at the cheapest price. But as a puppy’s cuteness grows quickly into the energy of a teenage dog, he wanted to conquer the world, find his place, and most importantly, needed companionship and loving guidance. But for Thor, the world simply fell apart. The children of his owners were no longer interested in their dog, the parents split up, each going their own way… only Thor remained at home, fed irregularly, no one took him out, and no one cared about the curious and athletic hunting dog. Now, young dogs that are not occupied find their own entertainment, and soon enough, Thor had stamped his personal mark on all the furniture, shoes, cushions, and walls. Instead of now questioning how to be a better friend to the despondent dog, Thor’s owners gave him away to a relative. This relative kept Thor in a small pen in a corner of their property. Sometimes the young dog was allowed to run around the yard a bit, which should be his only leisure activity until the animal welfare workers from Dolmen Animal noticed him. When our partners saw how emaciated and neglected Thor was, they took the grateful male dogs into their care. In the animal shelter of our friends, a new life has already begun for Thor. He has found friends, two- and four-legged, and can play and explore the world. Though the undernourished hunting dog is still very quiet, he is always by the side of the animal welfare workers and enjoys the cuddles and affection, the time people take for him. He shows himself to be an intelligent and highly eager-to-learn companion. At 20kg and a shoulder height of 58cm, Thor is still far too slender, but the athletic youngster now eats with joy, and so it is only a matter of time until his glossy coat no longer shows all the ribs. Thor is a wonderful dog who has fallen into the hands of completely incapable people. Fortunately, despite everything, he has remained open, friendly, and inquisitive. We wish for the tender heartbreaker an active family that can explain to him a happy life as a true family dog. Some experience with hunting dogs or the willingness to acquire this in good dog training classes would be nice, because Thor shows that he not only wants to be in absolute top form physically soon but also has a clever head that wants to be adequately occupied.

DE·Show original

About Thor

What life with Thor looks like

Thor is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Thor, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Thor?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Thor on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Thor if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Thor already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Thor isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Thor and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
