Johan

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Size: 32 cmAge: 09/2021 Compatible with: Males: YesFemales: YesCats: Not yet testedSince we've had him: Since: CAAD Castellbisbal September 2025 – Our friend Johan was undoubtedly abandoned because he was sick. Whoever simply threw him away must be a very bad person… In the spring, someone found the pretty pinscher male Johan all alone and brought him to us. The poor thing had a chronic bladder infection with bloody urine. During the castration, we operated on the bladder, flushed it, and removed the crystals – a great relief for Johan! At the same time, the diagnosis came: Johan has a liver shunt. This makes his liver smaller and doesn't function as it should (which is why the urine crystals formed). Some veterinarians recommend an operation for a single shunt, while others say that affected dogs can also live happily without an operation. The problem is that new shunts can form after an operation, which is why we decided not to operate on Johan. However, he will need his special liver food for the rest of his life. Today, he is doing well with the special food and liver protection tablets: his coat shines, his mood is great, and he is a cheerful, affectionate little guy. He loves cuddles, but he doesn't like to be picked up (typical pinscher!). He loves walks and is curious, smart, and full of life. Johan is now looking for a loving, experienced family that understands him, gives him security, and offers him a wonderful life. In his new home, there should be no children because Johan can only eat his special food. We would be overjoyed if he finds his happiness soon!

About Johan

What life with Johan looks like

Johan is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tiere in Spanien e.V. in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Johan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Johan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tiere in Spanien e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Johan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Johan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tiere in Spanien e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Johan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Johan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tiere in Spanien e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Johan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
