Toby

Dachshund · Male · Young · 2 years

Toby is a likely 2024-born mixed breed possibly between Dachshund and Beagle, who was wandering around a village in search of food but did not belong to anyone. He was taken in by the animal shelter of our Hungarian partner organization. He is an absolutely friendly, extremely cheerful boy who quickly makes friends. However, he knows exactly what he wants and doesn't want, coupled with a strong will. He is very lively, loves to romp around and won't be averse to any game. Toby is intelligent and learns quickly, but sometimes puts his ears on the backburner. Due to his stubborn character, we do not recommend him for families with younger children. He gets along well with female dogs, but with other males it depends on their sympathy. Therefore, as a second dog he suits better a female dog owner. It is unknown how he reacts to cats. He wants loving and active people who have enough free time, can educate him consistently and live either in the suburbs or rurally. Experience in dog keeping should already be present. The male has a shoulder height of 26 cm and weighs about 5-6 kg.

HU·Show original

About Toby

What life with Toby looks like

Toby is a small young adult dachshund dog waiting at Animal Care Hungary.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toby, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toby?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Animal Care Hungary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toby on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toby if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Animal Care Hungary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Toby already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toby isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Animal Care Hungary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toby and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
