Adopt Tom

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

- may be visited in Telgte - Tom is looking for a new homeThe dear Tom is sadly looking for a new home as the circumstances of his family have changed and he can no longer be given the time he deserves.Tom is a young, friendly, and very social dog who equally delights in people and other dogs. He gets along excellently with fellow animals and always invites them to play directly. He is open, cuddly, and enjoys the company of his people very much.Tom especially feels at home in a family environment. He knows children aged 5 to 14 and shows them great patience, playfulness, and absolute friendliness. Even if the play sometimes gets a bit turbulent, Tom reacts calmly and without aggressive behavior. Therefore, he could fit in very well with an active family.Due to Tom being young, he naturally brings a lot of energy and joy. A house with a garden would be ideal for him, but he could also be happy in an apartment if he gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. He usually masters several hours alone without a problem. His biggest "offense" so far has been stealing and shredding tissues from the trash can.During walks, Tom shows a hunting instinct – birds have particularly taken to him. At the same time, he is very eager to learn and reacts excellently to rewards and positive reinforcement. A visit to dog training classes would surely bring him great joy and further benefit him. He already runs well on a leash and can run freely in some parts in quiet natural areas. Occasionally, one still notices that as a puppy, Tom may have made some bad experiences with cars. Loud vehicles still sometimes unsettle him on walks. With patience and positive reinforcement, he has made great progress here.In total, Tom is an uncomplicated, cheerful, and loving dog who quickly feels at home and will give his people an incredible amount of joy. We wish him a loving home with people who want to give him time, security, and many beautiful shared adventures. We would be happy to connect him with his current family.

About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. in Nordwalde.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
