Toni

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 9 years

Tony, the handsome, nearly twelve-year-old tiger cat, came to us because he couldn't get along with the family's dog in his previous home. In the end, one had to leave - and that was Tony. We don't assume that the dog had also been part of the family for ten years or more. The extremely sensitive and people-oriented cat has been visibly thrown off by the events of the recent past. Everything in him oscillates permanently between the need for love and attention on the one hand, but also anger and disappointment on the other. Unfortunately, this means that even when he finally gets the desired petting, he can never really relax. It usually takes him too long for someone to bend down to him, so he accelerates the matter by blitzing up to the shoulder of the object of his desire. That the often frightened people are not exactly enthusiastic and first take a step back does not contribute to Tony's satisfaction. If it does come to intimate relationship work, Tony can lie very bravely next to his human partner and cling to him while being stroked. His mood can just as quickly turn around and he makes his deep-seated frustration with teeth and claws. The disturbed guy uses his "weapons" just far enough to make his grief noticeable without seriously hurting his opponent. Nevertheless, it leaves some bipeds baffled by this rather unpredictable behavior. The problem is that the sensitive Toni is deeply traumatized by what he has experienced and needs a lot of time to recover from this episode of his life and to develop unreserved trust in his two-legged companions again. After all, he not only had to live more or less long in close quarters - he lived as a pure apartment cat and could not escape outside - with a potentially threatening new family member. He also experienced the loss of everything that had previously made up his life in his advanced age. Therefore, Tony needs very calm, patient and cat-experienced people who are not thrown off by his occasional small attacks. The secret is to stop his sometimes unrestrained approaches and his violence (preferably by consistent withdrawal) and at the same time always to meet him with love and understanding. Nevertheless, it will take time for Tony to realize that he can rely on his new people. His new family must be able to give him this time. It goes without saying that there should be neither (small) children nor other animals in the new home. So it is necessary to overcome some hurdles to heal Tony from his experiences and make him a relaxed cat. But we are sure that his people will be richly rewarded for it. Because at the side of the right people, the attached Tony will certainly be an extremely lovable companion who gives back just as much as his people are willing to give. DE·Show original

About Toni

What life with Toni looks like

Toni is an adult mixed breed cat waiting at Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. in Neuwied.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toni, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toni?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toni on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toni if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Toni already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toni isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toni and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
