Tonka

English Bulldog · Male · Adult · 7 years

Lovely Tonka can be a little aloof when he first meets people, but once he has built a bond, you'll see his affectionate side come out. He absolutely loves a good bum scratch and will happily soak up attention from his favourite people. Tonka can be a little worried around other dogs, but with calm introductions, he would benefit from making some polite doggy friends who can help him build his confidence. He will need to continue having positive experiences at his own pace. When it comes to playtime, Tonka is a big fan! He adores his toys, particularly anything squeaky, although his soft toys don't tend to stay fluffy for very long! He also enjoys a good game of tug and loves having a zoom around when he gets the chance. Tonka knows a sit and is very enthusiastic when treats are involved. He's not particularly fussy and will happily work for his favourite snacks, with carrots and watermelon being firm favourites. His new family could have lots of fun teaching him some new tricks and helping him build his confidence through reward-based training. For walks, Tonka enjoys exploring woodland and countryside routes, as well as having a good run around in secure dog fields. Busy towns can be a little overwhelming for him, and he definitely isn't a fan of rainy weather! Give him some sunshine, though, and you'll often find Tonka making the most of it with a good old sunbathe. If you're looking for a cheeky, toy-loving companion who will reward your patience with affection, Tonka could be the boy for you. Tonka is a 7-year-old French Bulldog who is looking for a quiet, experienced home where he can take things at his own pace. He will need to be the only dog in the home and would also prefer a home without cats or small furries. We don't have any history of Tonka around livestock. Tonka will need an adult-only home with minimal visitors, as he can find busy or unfamiliar environments a little worrying. Once he has built a bond with his people, he is an affectionate boy who enjoys spending time with those he knows and trusts. Tonka isn't used to being left on his own, so his new family will need to gradually build up the time he is left as he settles in. He is housetrained and travels well in the car. Tonka can pull a little on lead at times and isn't comfortable walking in busy towns, so he would be happiest with someone who can offer him quieter walks. Tonka is also quite the escape artist, so a secure garden will be essential to keep this cheeky boy safe!

About Tonka

What life with Tonka looks like

Tonka is a large adult english bulldog dog waiting at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe in Ilfracombe.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tonka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tonka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Ilfracombe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tonka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tonka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Ilfracombe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tonka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tonka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Ilfracombe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tonka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
