Tonka

Mixed Breed Β· Male Β· Adult Β· 7 years

Please meet Tonka who is about 7 years old and is a small breed ex stud dog who has not had a good life so far. He arrived into our care shut down with severe dental issues which had been left uncared for for years. After emergency surgery he was left with only 3 teeth. He had ongoing stomach issues due to continuous infections from his mouth and was underweight and had not been socialised. He has been neutured, vaccinated, wormed and flea treated and was in shock with all this happening in his first few weeks of arrival but he has forgiven us and has become a different dog now. His health issues have all been taken care of and he is looking for his forever home. Tonka needs to be with another dog to continue to learn what life is all about and give continued confidence. He is on a soft natural diet and he loves his food now. He recently started to learn what play is with his foster pal Betty Boo and it is so rewarding to see him doing this. He has started now to go for walks but can be barky, as the big outside world for a little lad like him can be scary, but he gains his confidence from being with one of his foster pals. He likes his warm snuggle place next to you and a fuss but is not a lap dog. He now also likes to cuddle with his other foster pals. He hates crates but has come on in leaps and bounds living in a home. He does still have the occasional little accident but has never been house-trained, so that is to be expected. He can be left for a couple of hours. He will need grooming, as his fur which we had to shave off is now growing back. He is getting used to having a soft brush on him now and, although not fond of them, will have a bath. He has not lived with cats or young children.HOMING INFOTonka is looking for an understanding loving home with a family with older children 10+ who will continue to teach him life can be good. He needs to be with another small confident dog who will be his friend in all his new adventures. He will need a secure garden an

About Tonka

What life with Tonka looks like

Tonka is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Futures for Dogs in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible β€” a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tonka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tonka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Futures for Dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tonka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tonka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Futures for Dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Tonka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tonka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Futures for Dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tonka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
