Turko &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

This is Turko – a Waterdog (3 years old), around 16 kg "light" and about knee-high. He came into the care of Mastines en la Calle in a state where one wondered briefly if there was still a dog underneath his fur. Spoiler: There was. After the shave, he was barely recognizable – from "carpet with stick" he became a really handsome fellow with a sharp gaze and a cautious plan to start anew. Turko is extremely friendly but still reserved – but he is ready to look at the world from a different perspective. Turko's owner has passed away and was obviously no longer capable of properly caring for his four-legged companions. While Turko's story is sad, it could be the starting point for a happy and well-cared-for life … Turko has already been neutered and vaccinated. He tested positive for Babesiosis at the Mediterranean Check and was treated directly. He is doing wonderfully and does not require any follow-up therapy. However, one should occasionally have a blood test done to quickly recognize any new infection. It is also important to have a complete tick protection to prevent any weakening of the already compromised immune system. If you are interested in Turko, you should also trust the tick collars or spot-ons. For dogs like Turko, a prophylaxis with coconut oil or amber is not a viable alternative. Characteristically, Turko is a very noble, sensitive male dog. He forms connections at his own pace and needs a lot of understanding. Whoever gives him time will win a dog who does not immediately become the host but rather politely knocks on the door first. Turko gets along with other dogs, which can be helpful in new situations – a sovereign only dog can therefore be an advantage, but it is not a must. What Turko needs? People with heart, patience, and an understanding that courage is sometimes measured in millimeters. No rushing, but clear guidance with positive reinforcement for every progress. A daily routine with reliable procedures, small-step training for the bright hunting dog head, and the certainty that he will not lose his home "just like that." If you are looking for a dog who is not immediately the party moderator but rather the sympathetic type who stands at the sidelines and then – when he feels secure – suddenly blossoms, Turko could be your dog.

Was Turko braucht?

About Turko &#8211

What life with Turko &#8211 looks like

Turko &#8211 is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Turko &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Turko &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Turko &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Turko &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Turko &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Turko &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Turko &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
