Dottie

Unknown · Young · 1 year

Our lovely Panzerwels Dottie is probably a Sterbas Panzerwels and urgently needs to be with other fish of her kind. Panzerwels are very social fish and must never be kept alone. Dottie will therefore only be rehomed with an existing group of at least five other Sterbas Panzerwels. The animals will feel even more comfortable in a larger group of eight to ten or more of their own kind. Sterbas Panzerwels grow to about six to seven centimeters in size and are peaceful, sociable bottom dwellers. Together they search the substrate for food, rest close together and show interesting group behavior. A well-established aquarium of at least 80 centimeters in length or around 100 to 112 liters is needed for Dottie. Since Panzerwels sift through the substrate with their sensitive barbels, they need fine, rounded sand. Sharp-edged or coarse gravel is unsuitable. Roots, plants, leaves and sheltered retreats provide a varied and natural environment. At the same time, there should be enough open substrate for foraging. The water temperature should be around 23 to 28 °C. Clean, oxygen-rich water, good filtration and regular partial water changes are important. As gut breathers, Panzerwels occasionally swim to the surface to breathe air - the path there must always be free. Dottie is an omnivore and needs her own sinking food as well as a varied supplement of suitable frozen or live food. Panzerwels are not just "scavengers" and must not be dependent on what other fish leave behind. Dottie can be kept with peaceful aquarium inhabitants that have similar requirements for temperature and water values. However, a suitable group of their own kind is crucial, as other Panzerwels species do not replace the company of other Sterbas Panzerwels.

About Dottie

What life with Dottie looks like

Dottie is a young adult animal waiting at Tierheim Linz in Linz.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Dottie far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dottie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dottie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Linz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dottie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dottie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Linz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dottie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dottie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Linz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dottie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
