Urmel

Mixed Breed · Male

The handsome, but "aged" Urmel came from a confiscation. His "breeding" and his sad past were reflected in his entire demeanor and posture. He has recovered so well and developed so wonderfully. With his familiar caregivers, he plays like a cheerful, lively "clown" 🙂 and does not react to typical protective service commands. New people can already give him treats and gentle affection through the bars. Behind the fence, he barks at strangers "German Shepherd-type" alertly. The handsome male dog loves his walks, with lots of sniffing and cuddle phases. Even brushing now works with a lot of calm. He is very forward and somewhat "off the beaten path" with female dogs as a former stud, especially if a female of his kind is in heat nearby 😉 It would be good to test this if there is already a female dog in the new household. He has so far refused male dogs. He does not want to be "worked with," he just wants to lead a carefree life with his people—walking, playing, snuggling, and never thinking about "the past." His blood was fine until now, but the X-ray showed one-sided arthritis in his hip, and he now gets pain medication permanently. — Despite this, he still has a "prey drive" 😉 and we have to be quite careful when passing our cats! We are looking for—only with a longer getting-to-know-you phase—people with true German Shepherd experience without children, in a rural environment, where he can simply build his trust and be a close companion. Caging is no longer an option for the fast-friering male dog. He should get a quiet place with his people, but one where he is not disturbed. Financial guardian An.Scho. covers 90 € per month for me—patronage covered!

About Urmel

What life with Urmel looks like

Urmel is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Sadelkow - Gnadenhof Sonnenschein e.V. in Datzetal.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Urmel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Urmel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Sadelkow - Gnadenhof Sonnenschein e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Urmel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Urmel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Sadelkow - Gnadenhof Sonnenschein e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Urmel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Urmel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Sadelkow - Gnadenhof Sonnenschein e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Urmel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
