adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Urmel has found a home! His story: Urmel is a six-year-old, approximately 50 cm tall, black-and-white charmer with soft fur and a warm gaze. Visually, he resembles a Border Collie, but character-wise, he is the exact opposite: a laid-back, food-loving "Garfield-dog" who adores his food and long naps. Currently, Urmel still needs to lose a bit of weight to reach his comfort weight. While eating, he occasionally shows a small grumpy side, but otherwise, he is a very gentle, affectionate, and quiet companion. He is a true "nice weather" dog. On rainy days, he does his business at the first tree and wants to go home immediately, while on good weather days, he enjoys leisurely, unhurried walks. House-trained, of course. In his foster home, Urmel lives peacefully with two male dogs, two female dogs, and a cat. He also gets along well with rodents, chickens, and children. He can be rehomed as either a single dog or a quiet dog buddy. Especially endearing is his habit of keeping his pack together – he would even follow his people into the supermarket if necessary. Due to his more laid-back movements, X-rays were taken. They show mild spondylotic changes in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae as well as on the left shoulder. With the prescribed pain medication Carpotab 100 mg, Urmel is well mobile and gets along well in everyday life. An apartment on the ground floor suits him best; a first-floor apartment is still doable, but higher floors are only possible with an elevator. Overall, he behaves like a laid-back senior who likes it quiet and predictable. For people who love his relaxed, friendly, and sometimes slightly diva-like nature, Urmel is a wonderful companion. He is ideal for quiet households, seniors, or those who don't want a sporty whirlwind but a loyal, gentle friend by their side. Urmel can immediately travel to his new home with a microchip, EU pet passport, vaccination, neutering, deworming, and flea treatment. He is microchipped, vaccinated, neutered, dewormed, and flea-treated and can travel to his new home with an EU pet passport. Stand: 14.11. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the namingsponsor Stefanie D., who gave Urmel his original name and thus his own identity. A big thank you also goes to Sandra B., who took on a monthly sponsorship for Urmel.

Stand: 14.11.2025

About Urmel

What life with Urmel looks like

Urmel is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Urmel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Urmel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Urmel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Urmel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Urmel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Urmel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Urmel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
