Vernon

Greyhound · Male · Young · 3 years

Vernon is looking for a home with loving and active adopters who can take him on sniffy adventures, who will take the time to help him settle in and give him all the love and attention he deserves. He is a friendly bean who could live with primary school children who are confident with larger, goofy dogs, children who will play with him nicely and will give him space to rest when needed. Vernon likes all of the attention to himself, so is looking to be the only pet in the home, he likes other dogs and would be happy with polite and friendly walking buddies. He has some training under his belt and is currently doing muzzle training as he will need to be on a lead and muzzle at all time is public due to a high chase drive. He would like a home with a private, secure garden for him to have off lead time pottering about in at his leisure. Vernon can be worried being left alone, so is looking for a family with someone home the majority of the time, especially to begin with, but with time he could be left for up to 4 hours. Any leaving time would need to be built up slowly once he has had time to settle into his new home. Vernon will need to meet his adopters a few times prior to going home so please bear all of this in mind when applying. Meet Vernon, the silly and goofy 3 and a half year old Greyhound who loves fuss and play in equal measure. He will happily chase after anything you throw for him, but he especially likes a rubber ball, and he is always up for a game of tuggy with a teddy. He is an affectionate lad, and will do the typical Greyhound lean when to scratch the right spot, he likes to snuggle up with you for a good snooze, so make sure you have a sofa big enough for this beautiful boy.

About Vernon

What life with Vernon looks like

Vernon is a large young adult greyhound dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vernon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vernon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vernon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vernon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vernon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vernon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vernon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
