Adopt Vernon

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

* shoulder height approximately 53 cm, weight approximately 27 kg -- that is slightly smaller than a Flatcoated Retriever, it is the shoulder height of a Border Collie, but Vernon is somewhat heavier than that breed. * For an explanation, please read Why we are cautious about placing our dogs with families with (small) children. Personality: Vernon is a sensitive, loving, gentle dog who can still find the world around him exciting. He needs a master who can guide him gently and recognize his signals well. Adopter profile (or possibly a foster family): Behavior at home: Vernon is very calm at home, he can amuse himself very well. He is still a relatively young dog, so occasionally he does play, both by himself and with the other dog in the foster family. He can greatly enjoy running around with her through the house. He generally finds other dogs very nice, as long as they react socially to him and don't bark too loudly. Vernon is very kind and gentle and enjoys attention without being demanding. He likes to lie next to his foster parent and finds it lovely when they tickle his belly. When people pass by outside, he is somewhat alert and barks; but he can be easily reassured in this. He is very sensitive and therefore needs a patient, calm master who guides him gently. He can be alone for a while, he doesn't then lie in a crate. This will obviously have to be built up again in a new home. He also finds visitors initially quite exciting. Although he comes to greet the visitors, he does so with a low posture and somewhat nervously. If the visitors then speak to him in a friendly tone, it quickly becomes okay. He loves the sunshine, and inside he always looks for a spot in the sun. He is very smart and makes super fast connections, understanding quickly what is expected of him in situations.

About Vernon

What life with Vernon looks like

Vernon is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vernon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vernon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vernon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vernon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vernon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vernon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vernon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
