Vilja

Mixed Breed · Unknown

There was hardly any help for homeless dogs in the Cosoba area before Adina's shelter. Therefore, information about the shelter kennel has spread quickly and locals know well where to take dogs in need of help. For the dogs, access to the shelter kennel is a big win, but for Adina, who constantly stretches her resources to the limit, the continuous flood of new dogs is a difficult situation. Especially hard are the springs and autumns, when many puppies are born. In addition to many people who rescue and bring their found stray puppies to Adina, puppies of owned dogs also end up in the shelter kennel. Although Adina continuously organizes free sterilizations in Cosoba, there are still many unspayed dogs and puppies are born in large numbers. When puppies keep coming, the resources are barely enough for the basics. Therefore, some puppies grow up shy, as they have very little social interaction and new experiences. Vilja is one of these dogs who grew up shy in the shelter kennel. He arrived at the shelter as a puppy, but unlike his siblings, he remained shy and therefore never found his own home. Vilja rarely meets strangers, so it's no surprise that strange people make him nervous. Vilja tends to quickly retreat under his blanket for safety, and when visitors come to the shelter, you rarely see him outside the blanket. However, the staff of the shelter say that despite his shyness, Vilja is friendly towards people. Vilja lives comfortably with the other dogs in the shelter and seeks great safety from them. A confident dog companion would certainly be a great help for Vilja in his future home.

Vilja on yksi näistä tarhalla ujoksi kasvaneista koirista.

About Vilja

What life with Vilja looks like

Vilja is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Embla Rescue in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vilja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vilja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Embla Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vilja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vilja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Embla Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vilja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vilja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Embla Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vilja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
