Vito

European Shorthair · Male · Senior · 16 years

This large boy with a tired look has probably had a long life on the streets. When he came to us, he was already chipped, and we found out that he went missing 12 years ago. We don't know where he has been in the meantime, but it's possible that he had to fend for himself. The people who reported him missing 12 years ago have understandably moved on with their lives and couldn't take him back, so now we're looking for a new home for him. After such a long and difficult life, we don't know what to expect from him. He hides a lot and is very afraid of us. But slowly, he is starting to get used to us. He no longer hisses and dares to come out a bit more, so that's something. Probably he is very scared and overwhelmed by everything in the shelter. We are looking for a quiet place for him with experienced owners who will give him a good time. It's difficult to say how he will develop in the house, and his ideal owners will approach this project with low expectations and an open mind. It's important to start with him in one room so he can gradually get used to his new home and can't escape outside. Check out the "shy cats and kittens" page on our website for an idea of what to expect and how to guide him. Vito has seen the outside world. We think he would do well in an apartment, where it is wonderfully quiet. A (fenced) balcony would be a nice plus. We don't know how long he has left, but due to his age and the difficult life on the streets, it will be clear to you that Vito won't live for years and years. But he would be overjoyed to live somewhere in a quiet environment and be spoiled rotten by a new owner, for as long as he has left. Would you like to give Vito the best time of his life? Come and visit him. Then for him it will be truly the best, and he has more than earned it!

NL·Show original

About Vito

What life with Vito looks like

Vito is a senior european shorthair cat waiting at Dierenasiel Utrecht in Utrecht.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vito, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vito?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Utrecht handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vito on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vito if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Utrecht will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vito already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vito isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Utrecht early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vito and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
