Wally

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

About Wally Wally came to the centre via an inspector after his needs were not getting met. He is a sweet but shy boy when meets he people for the first time. Once he knows he is safe, he loves deep sigh cuddles, gentle ear scratches, and being your loyal shadow. If you have the patience to let him open up at his own pace, he will promise to give you a lifetime of love & devotion. The first time you meet, he might not run up to you wagging his tail. he might look at you with big, worried eyes from a safe distance but the world can just feel a little overwhelming sometimes. He soon comes round and then you will see his playful cheeky and loving side, the side we see everyday. We have recently seen his love of the water and has been swimming in the river with the staff. Wally is ready make memories and go on adventures with his new family, he is ready to make up for lost time and all he has missed out on before coming here. Wally does need some further training, he is extremely intelligent and thrives on learning new things. Wally can be quite vocal when he gets excited, it is just his way. Wally would be best suited with experienced dog owners to give him the best chance of transitioning in to his new home. Wally is sociable with other dogs while out on a walk and enjoys having a play about with them.

About Wally

What life with Wally looks like

Wally is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at RSPCA York Animal Home in York.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Wally, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Wally?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Animal Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Wally on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Wally if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Animal Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Wally already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Wally isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Animal Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Wally and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
