Wexford

Male · Young · 1 year

Wexford is looking for an active family who can continue his training and help guide his enthusiastic young Boxer personality. He loves getting out for walks and happily enjoys an hour to an hour and a half each day, although he can be strong on the lead at first and, with his puppy brain still very much in gear, he can become excited and try to greet people by jumping up. He currently lives happily alongside a cat in foster, often choosing to sleep beside them, and is calm around other dogs, usually preferring to simply sniff and carry on with his walk. He has also met children aged 7–12 and has been instantly friendly, responding well when asked to sit or calm down, although due to his bouncy nature we feel he would be best suited to a home with secondary school-aged children or older. Wexford can be vocal when left alone, so any time on his own should be built up gradually. He is a delightfully affectionate, fun-loving companion with so much love to give, and whoever welcomes this special boy into their family will be gaining a truly wonderful friend. Wexford is a wonderful 1-year-6-month-old Boxer who is currently thriving in foster care and has been an absolute pleasure to have around. He settled into his foster home quickly after exploring his new surroundings and is fully house trained, although he appreciated puppy pads during his first few nights while he found his feet. Wexford is a real foodie who enjoys his meals and takes treats gently, although he has been known to help himself to food left on the kitchen side! He loves affection and cuddles and will happily snooze at his foster carer's feet while they work from home. He enjoys being groomed, has happily had his nails trimmed, and while he can occasionally be a little head shy, he is a gentle and affectionate boy who forms lovely bonds with his people.

About Wexford

What life with Wexford looks like

Wexford is a young adult dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Wexford, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Wexford?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Wexford on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Wexford if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Wexford already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Wexford isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Wexford and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
