Whisky

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 9 years

Whisky and Balou are approximately three years old and are likely British Shorthair mixes. We know little about their history, as they lived with their last owner for only about three weeks before it became clear that they were not the right fit for this home. This was due to the cat they were to share their new home with, which they could not tolerate. Mostly, however, they did not get along with the family's children, who made them very afraid. Since Whisky and Balou are strictly indoor cats, they could not escape the stress that the new environment meant for them, so it was clear relatively quickly that there could be no future for humans and cats together. We do not know what life was like for the tiger couple in the past. Whisky probably had offspring before, possibly with the involvement of Balou. Of course, they were neutered in the meantime, and the veterinary examination was otherwise completely unremarkable: the two rather small cats are lively. Only the stress of the recent past is clearly noticeable in them, because they did not want to know anything about their foster mother at first. For some weeks, communication consisted mainly of hissing on one side and appropriate restraint on the other. Meanwhile, Whisky and Balou have arrived at their new foster home and are increasingly showing that they are actually wonderful cuddly cats. Above all, the very small and slender Whisky has revealed herself to be a very calm, gentle and affectionate female cat after a phase of building trust. Balou, who reacted much more fearfully than his friend from the beginning, is still somewhat more reserved. In any case, the new owners must bring a larger portion of patience with them. As much as they (strangers) are cautious, they keep the peaceful mood with their fellow cats for a short time. As soon as the two have settled in a bit, the trouble starts and Balou makes it very clear that he does not tolerate any cat except Whisky next to him. Since the two really love each other and give each other a lot of security, we do not want to separate them under any circumstances. Therefore, Whisky and Balu should be allowed to live together in their new home, but without competition. Their people should be very calm and patient and ideally have experience with cats. Children should not live in the household, in any case they should be a bit older (teenagers) and also very reserved. As before, Whisky and Balou should continue to live indoors, a secured balcony from which they can observe the "wide world" but not escape would be perfect. Further information: 0157 - 52 68 76 61.

DE·Show original

About Whisky

What life with Whisky looks like

Whisky is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. in Neuwied.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Whisky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Whisky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Whisky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Whisky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Whisky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Whisky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Katzenhilfe Neuwied e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Whisky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
