Woody

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Woodys owner tried to abandon him at the gate, but he was caught and then dropped him off at the animal shelter. The poor young male dog had the worst cherry eyes (inflammation and enlargement of the nictitating membrane gland) one can imagine. In the first two photos, this is still clearly visible. We had both eyes operated on, and now Woody is doing much better. The third photo shows him shortly after the operation, and on the lower photos, you can see how he looks now. Woody is a male dog who is initially skeptical around strangers. Therefore, he can only be introduced to people without children who have experience with this type of dog. We suspect that he has also had negative experiences in the past, leading to an inconsistent life and a lack of clear guidance. If he trusts a person, he wiggles his whole body in joy when you fetch him from his enclosure for a walk. One must be careful that Woody doesn't get excited and start running, as he is generally very "physically" and not well-trained. He requires de-energizing and no "pushing up." Woody rides in the car and is house-trained. We don't know which breeds are mixed in with him. His owner listed "Boxer," but we also suspect an Old English Bulldog or Cane Corso. One must be able to hold a strong dog when walking with Woody. However, he is usually more laid-back when out, and at times he tests what he can do by standing or sitting still. With birds and rabbits, he is very eager to chase them and can be quite strong. One must hold on securely and stand firmly. He is age-appropriate in his curiosity but also reacts to movement stimuli. For compatibility on walks with other dogs, it depends on their mutual liking. Woody reacts very negatively to some male dogs.

About Woody

What life with Woody looks like

Woody is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Woody, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Woody?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Woody on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Woody if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Woody already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Woody isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Woody and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
