Benji

Labrador Retriever · Male · Senior · 11 years

Say hello to Benji, our gorgeous 11-year-old Labrador cross who may be a little older, but certainly hasn’t lost his zest for life and still has the cutest puppy-dog eyes!! True to his Lab-cross nature, Benji absolutely loves a game of fetch and he’s more than happy to keep you entertained all day long! He’ll happily bring his favourite toy back to you, drop it at your feet and wait patiently for the next throw. Who needs a personal trainer when you have Benji? Despite being a senior boy, Benji still loves getting out and about and enjoys exploring new places on his walks. He’s also a bright boy who is keen to learn new things, particularly when there’s a tasty treat involved! He’s been doing brilliantly with his training here at the centre and is looking for an experienced owner who can continue his training and help him keep building his confidence once he’s settled into his new home. Benji is an affectionate, outgoing boy who loves meeting new people. He’s definitely an extrovert and enjoys being part of the action, although he does like to make sure everyone is up to his exacting standards! He adores getting lots of love from his handlers and is known to lean his weight against you in an attempt to get the most fuss possible! Benji is looking to be the only pet in the home, as he can feel uncomfortable around other dogs. He can live with older secondary school-aged children who are comfortable around dogs. A home with a garden all to himself would be ideal for Benji, giving him somewhere to stretch his legs and enjoy some sunbathing as he is known as a bit of sun worshiper! If you’re looking for a loving, fun-loving companion who still has plenty of adventures left to enjoy, Benji could be the boy for you. AWE licence number 13090 by West Lothian Council.

About Benji

What life with Benji looks like

Benji is a senior labrador retriever dog waiting at Dogs Trust West Calder in West Calder.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Benji, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Benji?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust West Calder handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Benji on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Benji if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust West Calder will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Benji already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Benji isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust West Calder early rather than rehoming privately; they know Benji and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
