Adopt Zara

Podenco · Female

Zara is a really sweet small sized pod mix who is doing well in foster in Spain with many other podencos of all sizes and ages. She is living in a home environment so is getting very accustomed to sofas, the TV, hoover, counter tops etc, which sets her up really well for a transition to her forever home. Over Christmas, Zara went with her foster dad for a visit to another home with cats where she did brilliantly and as such she could be homed with cats. She can be a little shy with new humans at first, but really enjoys a cuddle so once she knows you, will happily relax and snuggle up with you. She’s great with all the other dogs and also likes to cuddle up to them on the sofa, but we do think she could also live as an only dog. In early February she took part in the local Spanish Hunting Dog Protest in a Spanish town near to her foster. She did well meeting new people and walking with other dogs in a relatively busy area so towns or city suburbs would be OK for her. She walks well on the lead and was quite happy to be out and about representing Podencos. Zara is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases excluding Babesia - as already stated she has tested positive and is receiving treatment for this for the all clear. She is passported and available for adoption now. If you would prefer to make a one off donation, please click below

About Zara

What life with Zara looks like

Zara is a small adult podenco dog waiting at Hope for Podencos in Albacete.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hope for Podencos handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hope for Podencos will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hope for Podencos early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
