Hello... My name is Abu and I've never had a home. I am 9 years old and I know that I'm not the dog everyone is looking for. My hair has gray hairs, my size isn't that of a little lap dog and in my eyes you can see the tiredness of having lived an entire life outdoors. For 9 years, my home was the cold asphalt of a town. There were good people who left me some food, and I thank them for it, but when night fell and it started to rain, everyone went into their homes with their families... and I stayed outside, huddled in any corner, wondering what it would feel like to be on the other side of the door. In 9 years on the street, no one had ever petted me. I didn't know what that warmth was. I discovered it recently when I arrived at the shelter. At first I was scared, but the volunteers looked at me with so much tenderness that I let myself be carried away. Since then, they never stop putting little bandages in the shape of kisses on the scars of my soul. Now I know that humans can give love... but I still don't know what it is to have my own human. My own family. The volunteers say they won't give up on me, that somewhere there is a special person who will not look at my age or size, but rather my desire to make up for lost time. Someone who wants to give me the best years of my life. I don't want to ask much. Just a warm corner, a routine, and some arms that squeeze me tight when I'm scared. Mi pelo ya tiene canas, mi tamaño no es el de un cachorrito faldero y en mis ojos se nota el cansancio de haber vivido una vida entera a la intemperie. Durante 9 años, mi hogar fue el frío asfalto de un pueblo. Había personas buenas que me dejaban algo de comer, y se lo agradezco, pero cuando caía la noche y empezaba a llover, todos entraban a sus casas con sus familias… y yo me quedaba fuera, acurrucado en cualquier rincón, preguntándome qué se sentiría al estar del otro lado de la puerta. En 9 años en la calle, jamás nadie me había acariciado. No sabía lo que era ese calor. Lo descubrí hace poco, cuando llegué a la protectora. Al principio tenía miedo, pero los voluntarios me miraron con tanta ternura que me dejé llevar. Desde entonces, no paran de ponerme tiritas en forma de besos en las cicatrices de mi alma. Ahora sé que los humanos pueden dar amor… pero me falta saber lo que es tener mi propio humano. Mi propia familia. Dicen los voluntarios que no van a tirar la toalla conmigo, que en algún lugar hay una persona especial que no mirará mi edad ni mi tamaño, sino mis ganas de recuperar el tiempo perdido. Alguien que quiera regalarme los mejores años de mi vida. No quiero pedir mucho. Solo un rincón calentito, una rutina, y unos brazos que me aprieten fuerte cuando tenga miedo. No tienes que preocuparte por nada más que por quererme: Si me tienes en acogida, la protectora se hace cargo de todos mis gastos. Tú solo tienes que abrirme tu corazón; del veterinario y la comida ya se encargan ellos. No quiero ser el perro de todos y de nadie para siempre.
