Ace

American Bully · Male · Adult · 5 years

Ace is—without exaggeration—a remarkable treasure in XL format: witty, sprightly, and incredibly charming. Yes, at size and weight, "sprightly" can also mean that one might trip over their own feet at times, but Ace remains sweet as sugar, polite, and completely people-loving. Unfortunately, he has a true health odyssey behind him—two necessary cruciate ligament surgeries, months of rest with us, and yet he has not lost his devotion and friendliness towards humans, nor his sense of humor. On the contrary, he has wound the doctors and caregivers so affectionately around his little finger that they even gave him a cuddly toy for his recovery period, which Ace happily disassembled into its individual parts. So golden he is: Ace is an adult XL Bully and needs people who know that "leadership" does not mean "hardness," but clear rules, planned routines, clean timing, consistency, and patience, and to stick to it reliably. Otherwise, it can happen that Ace "forgets" that he is actually already quite well on the leash, that one should not bully other dogs, and that the much-loved Kong does not necessarily fall into his personal property register. Additionally, Ace will likely not be able to be left alone at the beginning, and his frustration tolerance is currently quite overstretched. Both are topics that need to be worked on—quietly, structured, and without drama. For Ace, we wish for a quiet, ground-floor home, preferably with a fenced yard, and handlers who would rather engage with his head and patience than demand top athletic performances. Children, other dogs, cats, or small animals should not live in the new home. Who wishes for a giant heart dog with clown talent and is also ready to lead him with consistency rather than just "checking in" on him—gets a real jackpot on four paws with Ace. Walks well on a leash.

DE·Show original

About Ace

What life with Ace looks like

Ace is an extra-large adult american bully dog waiting at Tierheim Hannover in Hannover.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: History of two cruciate ligament surgeries, requires structured training, cannot be left alone initially, low frustration tolerance, needs single-story home with fenced yard

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ace, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ace?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hannover handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ace on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ace if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hannover will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Ace already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ace isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hannover early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ace and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
