Adam

Labrador Retriever · Male

“Misunderstood Beauty” Breed: Labrador Retriever Gender: male, neutered Date of Birth: Dec. 2016 In animal shelter since: Sept. 2024 Gets along with dogs: probably yes Gets along with cats: no Children in the same household: no Home sought: house with a garden in the countryside The Labrador Retriever male dog Adam was misunderstood and mistreated his entire life (training without positive reinforcement, with pressure and coercion). As a result, he never learned to positively interact with people and requires a learning phase to build trust. At our shelter, he shows a very eager and clingy attitude when he gets to know someone. In his last home, he could stay alone for some time, is house-trained, rides politely in the car, and knows basic commands. Adam displays a typical prey drive, so cats do not belong among his friends. The previous owners reported that he gets along poorly with dogs, but at our shelter, he shows a curious and relaxed attitude towards fellow animals at a distance (the muzzle must be positively trained first). Adam cannot move into an apartment because the necessary distance from strangers (who he did not learn to positively associate with through non-compassionate training) cannot be provided in a small stairhouse. This distance is needed, however, as a similar situation with the previous owners led to a biting incident. Therefore, we are looking for a home for Adam in the form of a house with a garden in the countryside, as he knows it, but with people who promote and challenge him in a compassionate manner.

„Missverstandener Prachtkerl“ Rasse: Labrador Retriever Geschlecht: männlich, kastriert Geburtsdatum: Dez. 2016 Im Tierheim seit: Sept.

About Adam

What life with Adam looks like

Adam is a medium-sized adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Adam, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Adam?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Adam on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Adam if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Adam already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Adam isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Adam and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
