Adopt Shadow

Labrador Retriever · Male · 5 years

Shadow is a sports powerhouse with excellent basic obedience. It's a joy to take him for a walk in the city or in the mountains. He is house-friendly, enjoys taking the bus, going for car rides, jogging alongside the mountain bike, and can also spend hours in the garden. Uncharacteristic for his breed, he is cautious around water. However, his great passion is nose work. He wants to please and be challenged. He can be left alone and will guard the house and garden. He handles handling well, but only if it is ritualized or if he trusts the handler. This requires patience and skill. A strong primary caregiver with dog experience gives him security. On one hand, he is a sensitive dog who notices and reacts to bad moods. On the other hand, he has an issue with touch. He simply does not want to be touched outside his routine, and certainly not by Person XY. Then, he may overreact. It therefore lies with his person to take him in and protect him. He wears his muzzle with the same self-assurance that others wear their glasses. At first, he will wear a muzzle both indoors and outdoors. The easiest for Shadow is when there is only a two-person household. Every new person must be slowly and with all precautions integrated again. With the current foster home, it works well with two people. For Shadow, it is important that he can retreat to a place where he can be undisturbed. Similar to an autistic child, he likes to retreat to a tent. Patience and understanding for his personal space are the building blocks for a fine relationship. This healthy Labrador with a touch of Weimaraner stands in the middle of life. Shadow is ready for an active and understanding home. Until I finally find my forever home, I would be thrilled to have a loving godmother or a loving godfather who wants to support me and my costly food. Interested? Click here and contact me!

About Shadow

What life with Shadow looks like

Shadow is a extra-large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires muzzle training, sensitive to touch, needs single-person household initially, requires patient handling and socialization protocols

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shadow, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shadow?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shadow on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shadow if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shadow already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shadow isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shadow and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
