Aiko

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Aiko is a dog born in 2020, whose history is not fully known, but his current behavior clearly shows that he has had very difficult experiences. Aiko weighs 8.5 kg. He is an extremely frightened dog - contact with humans causes him great fear. In situations that are everyday for many dogs, Aiko reacts by trying to escape or complete "freezing". It can seem as if in the presence of humans he feels and acts as if he is fighting for survival. He does not tolerate touch, does not allow himself to be picked up and at this moment is not able to walk on a leash. Any attempt at closer contact causes him great stress. Most of the time he spends in his kennel, which is the only sense of safety for him - he is too terrified to explore the environment on his own. His attitude towards other dogs is not clearly defined. He had contact with dogs staying in the animal shelter, but due to his huge fear of caregiver he was not able to interact with them - he completely withdrew and froze. It is therefore difficult to assess his social skills towards other animals at this stage. Aiko is a dog that requires a specialized approach, great patience and work based on understanding his emotions. He will be subjected to behavioral therapy in the animal shelter, the goal of which is to gradually build a sense of security and minimize his fear. It is a long-term and demanding process, but one that offers a chance to improve the quality of his life. We are looking for a special home for Aiko - one that is ready to accept him as he is at the moment, without expectations and pressure. A quiet, predictable home, preferably with experience in working with fearful dogs. A caregiver who understands that trust with Aiko may take a very long time to build - weeks, months, possibly even longer. Aiko is not looking for a "normal" home. He is looking for a place where someone will give him space, time and a chance to feel safe for the first time in his life. Aiko is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped.

About Aiko

What life with Aiko looks like

Aiko is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Aiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Aiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Aiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Aiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Aiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Aiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Aiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
