Duke

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Duke is a young dog of boxer type, born in January 2025. He arrived at our shelter after the death of his owner and initially was a bit lost. Currently, he weighs around 19 kilograms. He is an energetic, cheerful, and very social dog who brings a lot of positive energy. He has a gentle disposition and readily forms relationships with both people and other dogs. He is curious about the world and eagerly explores his surroundings. However, he can be a bit scattered – in shelter conditions, he has trouble focusing for longer periods, easily gets distracted, and quickly shifts his interest to new stimuli. This is a typical young dog who needs proper guidance and work to learn concentration and discipline. Duke enjoys contact with humans – he readily allows himself to be petted, and the presence of caregivers brings him clear joy. He is an open and friendly dog who finds his place well in relationships with people. Toward other dogs, he shows a positive attitude. He had the opportunity to spend time with one of our female dog – he was very friendly toward her, though sometimes a bit forward in his interactions. He will need further training in dog communication and emotion regulation. We do not know his relationship with cats. Duke likes to eat, though he can be selective about his food. It will be important to find a diet that suits him and also supports his training work. He is already doing well with walking on a leash – he can walk quite nicely, though he still tugs occasionally, especially when something interests him. He requires further, calm work in this area. He is moderately barky. This is a dog with a light, cheerful disposition – one could say he is a "light spirit" who needs a caregiver ready to guide him and channel his energy in the right direction. Duke will best find his place in an active but also consistent and patient home. With the right approach, he will grow into an excellent, devoted companion.

Duke to młody pies w typie boksera, urodzony w styczniu 2025 roku. W stosunku do innych psów wykazuje pozytywne nastawienie.

About Duke

What life with Duke looks like

Duke is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Duke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Duke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Duke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Duke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Duke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Duke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Duke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
