How do I contact the shelter about Akiva?

Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Akiva on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.

Can I adopt Akiva if I live in another country?

Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.

Is Akiva already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?

Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.

What happens if Akiva isn't the right fit?

Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Akiva and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.

Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?

TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.

Akiva

Podenco · Female · Young · 2 years

Akiva was rescued from a four-meter-deep shaft. Whether she fell in or was thrown in intentionally, we will probably never know. What is certain is that she would not have been able to get out on her own. People who happened to pass by heard her barking and alerted the helpers from Melampo. With some effort and under not entirely safe circumstances, Akiva was finally rescued. When Akiva arrived at Melampo, she was very anxious and distrustful of people. Given her history, this is understandable. But Akiva is a clever dog and is now realizing that she has a lot of good things waiting for her at Melampo: loving people, safety, and many beautiful experiences. Step by step, she is regaining her trust and making good progress. She gets along with other dogs without any problems and feels comfortable in their company. So she is allowed to go out in the large dog group. With people, she still needs some time and patience, but she is also making progress every day. She is now sometimes seeking out human contact and enjoying her first pets. We are convinced that Akiva will soon thaw out and develop into a cuddly, cheerful companion. We are looking for a patient, loving home for Akiva that will give her the time she needs to build trust. Anyone who approaches her with calm and understanding will probably soon experience how the cautious dog becomes a loyal and cuddly companion.

DE·Show original

About Akiva

What life with Akiva looks like

Akiva is a young adult podenco dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.
