Alma &#8211

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 7 years

Our 7-year-old beauty, Alma, is a prime example of what happens to hunting dogs in Spain on a daily basis. The elegant Podenca belonged to a hunter who, between perverse hunts, would "tidy up" his dogs in the traditional manner. Some dogs find themselves on short chains (too short to lie down) in dark sheds, while others—like Alma—are kept in wooden crates too low to stand up in and too short to stretch her long hind legs. Between hunts, in the season, hours can pass with no rest, and outside the season, they often spend weeks, sometimes months, in their enclosures, with little human contact, losing their muscles. Alma's knees have quit service due to the constant cycle of inactivity and high-impact sports, her kneecaps are deformed, and Alma was deemed unfit for a hunt. Fortunately, her owner was not also a traditionalist when it came to the disposal of an unnecessary dog, or Alma would have ended up with broken legs in the wild, or hanged by a piano string in a tree … Instead, Alma landed in the hands of the animal welfare workers at Linares, and thus begins a new chapter for the affectionate dog lady, but perhaps there is even a chance for her to discover what it means to be a loved and spoiled house dog. Alma likes life at the animal shelter because it offers her comfortable lying spots, sunbathing, and contact with fellow animals without a heavy chain around her neck. She now gets along with the two-leggeds, but her mind hasn't fully come to terms with the fact that the era of harsh punishments, mistreatment, and neglect is over. But she clearly enjoys every kind word and every treat offered to her, and she no longer backs away when one of our partners approaches. Alma shows that she is ready to learn that there are also good people, and we are sure she would be open to sharing a couch with such examples. Alma's disability prevents her from sprinting through dense underbrush, but in everyday life, she runs well and safely, and as far as one can tell, without pain. Whether her condition will worsen is hard to predict, regular (targeted) exercise would certainly help to curb the arthritis, but that is difficult at the animal shelter … Alma is looking for a family that will take her on long, but leisurely walks, that will explain the world to her that she never got to know, and show her what love and affection mean. Our quiet, somewhat shy princess needs a quiet home with cozy lying spots and people who give her plenty of time and space to understand that her suffering time is truly in the past.

About Alma &#8211

What life with Alma &#8211 looks like

Alma &#8211 is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alma &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alma &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alma &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alma &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alma &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alma &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alma &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
