Adopt Amadeus

Male · 16 months

Caution! Amadeus resides at this breed shelter in Tilburg, and visiting him is not worthwhile! Amadeus is a handsome, energetic mixed breed Rottweiler, Dobermann, and Mechelse Herder, just one year old. An impressive mix – and you can see it not only in his appearance but also in his character. Amadeus is not a beginner dog and seeks an owner with experience, patience, and dedication. Amadeus has been separated from others due to his behavior towards strangers. He finds strangers very stressful and prefers to keep a wide berth. When people do get closer, he can become aggressive. Placing him with children is therefore not recommended. In a quiet, predictable environment with few unexpected encounters, Amadeus will feel the safest. In his young life, Amadeus has had little contact with other dogs. He simply doesn’t know how to handle this yet. From a distance, he barks a lot and tries to get to the other dog (stand firm, as the other end of the leash weighs 45kg and requires some strength). Up close, he – if the other dog remains calm – makes cautious contact, but his tension and excitement remain high. This is currently being actively trained. Outside, Amadeus is still a project. Due to his insecurity, he quickly becomes overexcited and is then difficult to reach. Happily, we see a different side of him on a familiar and quiet walking route: there, he can walk calmly and even when off the leash, he listens well. This shows how much potential this young dog has, provided he gets the right guidance. Amadeus clearly missed a significant amount of socialization and likely did not come from an optimal breeding background. Therefore, it is difficult to predict how much his behavior will improve with training. What we do see: he is young, adjusts relatively quickly to new people, is sensitive, and likes to work together. His tension is short-lived, and he is easily distracted, so training requires patience, clarity, and consistency. For Amadeus, we are looking for an experienced owner who: stands firm, has knowledge of (or experience with) dogs, is willing to invest time and energy in training, lives in a quiet and temperamental area (preferably not a busy neighborhood), has no children at home. Upon placement, professional behavioral advice is offered by Hundencampus, so the new owner receives guidance for the rest of the process. Amadeus is not a 'ready-made' dog, but for the right person, he can grow into a loyal, eager, and impressive companion. Are you that experienced owner who can provide the calm, clarity, and safety Amadeus so desperately needs? Do you want to meet Amadeus? Submit this via the form. We will then contact you to arrange a meeting. Without an appointment, a meeting is not possible.

About Amadeus

What life with Amadeus looks like

Amadeus is a large adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Utrecht in Utrecht.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amadeus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amadeus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Utrecht handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amadeus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amadeus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Utrecht will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amadeus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amadeus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Utrecht early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amadeus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
