Adopt Okkie

Male · Young · 1 year

Okkie is a 1-year-old neutered reutje, he is 45 cm tall. Okkie was born abroad and came to the local shelter as a pup of about 3 to 4 months old, with multiple bite wounds. It turned out that he had lived with a young woman who had found him on the street as a playmate for her rascally dog. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out as hoped: the other dog was very rough in handling, resulting in Okkie being bitten repeatedly. After an initial treatment, he returned once more, but when he was brought back a week later with new bite wounds, it was decided that he could no longer stay there. Fortunately, Okkie recovered quickly, was otherwise healthy, and grew into a beautiful dog. He now resides in a foster family in Nederhorst den Berg. Okkie is an energetic and affectionate pup who greets new people with warmth. He likes everyone and is very friendly, and if other dogs want to play, he is overjoyed. Beneath that enthusiastic exterior lies a bit of an unsure pup, so he still needs some confidence and guidance. But he wants and does it very well. A good outlet for his energy, but not with too many restrictions; lots of friends and a clear but gentle hand is what this dog needs. An activity like hide-and-seek would be good for him. Okkie is also a sensitive pup, so love and freedom are important. Okkie grew up in a house with other dogs, cats, and chickens. Nearby doggy friends are important to him, and he is happy to share his bed with another dog. Sometimes, when meeting some new dogs, he will first look at the cat from a distance. He enjoys playing with the cats but can be a bit enthusiastic, so the cat needs to clearly set boundaries.

About Okkie

What life with Okkie looks like

Okkie is a large young adult dog waiting at Stichting AAI in Amsterdam.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Okkie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Okkie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stichting AAI handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Okkie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Okkie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Stichting AAI will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Okkie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Okkie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stichting AAI early rather than rehoming privately; they know Okkie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
