Daddy Warbucks: Leapin' lizards! Maybe you know this too? My two-legged mama does! Comes from the musical Annie, where a red-haired orphan girl turns out to be a real survivor! Well... I'll just tell you who I am, and why I'm also called Annie: Last year in March I was found, in a trash bin! My 'owner' had taken me from my mother, put me in a plastic bag and threw that bag into a bin on the street! I was less than four weeks old, and was crying softly. Fortunately, a kind Spanish lady heard me, and saved my life. I was weak, and needed special food and help, so the help of rescuer Jacky was called in, who apparently does this often. I was taken in the car, got a warm water bottle against my body, and heard and smelled strange sounds and smells. The realization came... I was now an orphan... and maybe I had to go back into a trash bin again? Once with Jacky, I soon didn't feel hungry anymore, and fell asleep. I still heard some excited (or were they angry?) sounds and felt pulling on my paws and tugging here and there. But it didn't matter to me, I was warm and safe. I was an orphan, I didn't give up, I fought, I really wanted to. But my little paws wouldn't do what I wanted! It frustrated me, I wanted to walk. Jacky calls it swimmers syndrome (editor: this is a condition where the legs move outward instead of simply under the body. The pup can't stand and the chest gets flattened.) This is the reason why the owner Annie threw me away as trash! The pulling on my paws continued, I got a kind of harness around my body and Papa Arjan built structures where I had to move through. While I did that, they even sang!!! The song is called 'tomorrow', from the same musical? To cut a long story short... I survived, and I can walk!! A bit differently than other so elegant podencos, that's true. But I've forgotten the 'bad people'. And leapin' lizzards... I now have real parents!!! Jacky and Arjan have come to love me, and I love them. I stay, forever! 'Tomorrow' 'I love ya tomorrow!' This is the beautiful story of Annie. But of course, there is more to tell, and a reason why Annie has to remain a resident at Tanamera. Annie is now over a year old. Her gait is special. This is because her hind legs still stand slightly outward. And her front legs are a bit too far back. All of this makes that her back is now slightly curved. All of this is not a big problem for now, Annie is already getting glucosamine and supplements. But in the not too distant future, she will almost certainly get arthritis, and operations cannot be ruled out. And that will cost money, a lot! Simply put, we would rather keep Annie here, as a mascot and role model for Tanamera. In Spain, where our own veterinarian is relatively cheap and good, and also the climate is better for this type of dogs. Moreover, Annie suffers from 'shaken' head. It is unclear whether this is caused by incorrect muscle tension and the position of her shoulders, or whether she suffered brain damage while being in the plastic sealed bag (where she was dumped). In short... Annie remains safely at Tanamera. In our house, where also the elderly and special cases live. With sponsors, we hope to be able to pay for her annual X-rays and blood tests. And any additional medication and veterinary costs. Would you like to perhaps also sponsor this puppy and contribute to her care? The first X-rays and blood tests are scheduled during her spaying in June. After that, we will of course do another update!

‘Tomorrow’‘I love ya tomorrow!’ Haar loopje is bijzonder.

About Annie

What life with Annie looks like

Annie is a large young adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Annie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Annie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Annie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Annie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Annie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Annie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Annie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
