Ares

German Shepherd · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

Servus out there, my name is Ares. In the wake of an official inspection, I ended up at the animal shelter our shelter. Now I am searching for a new home. I am a very friendly male dog with familiar people. I like to please and will pull out all the stops. Sit? No problem. Stay? No problem. Fetch? Which one? With strangers, I need a little time to break the ice, but then I open up very quickly. I learn super fast and am very inquisitive; for a treat, I will do anything. On the leash, I pull strongly at first, but once the initial stress is off, I go very well-behaved and well-mannered and am good to talk to. I am currently practicing wearing a muzzle, which I wear quite well and should also be able to wear in densely populated areas or in the stairwell, as I sometimes go to the front when strangers come near to look at me or even talk to me. Otherwise, my nose is on the ground, as I have to check out my entire surroundings. Sniffing around makes me very happy, and I am sure I would be very motivated for tracking or search and rescue. My greatest passion is water. And balls. And sticks. I can't decide what I like best. No matter how cold it is, I have to jump into every stream! My ball is my holy grail, and my sticks are my greatest treasure. With other dogs, I am friendly by nature. Here at the animal shelter, I show no health issues. Breed-wise, my hip isn't the prettiest, but I can currently move around well and without pain. I am looking for a home with active people who already have experience with herding dogs and who would like to work with me and help me grow. A quiet neighborhood would be great, as many strangers stress me out. A friendly female dog may be welcome, but children should not live with me. If you would like to give me a home, please get in touch!.

Sitz? Kann ich. Platz? Kein Problem. Pfote? Dein Ares

About Ares

What life with Ares looks like

Ares is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutzverein St. Pölten in St. Pölten.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ares, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ares?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein St. Pölten handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ares on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ares if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein St. Pölten will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ares already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ares isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein St. Pölten early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ares and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
