Ares

Male · Adult · 7 years

Ares, a neutered male dog, 7 years old, foreign. Background. Ares was found more than 5 years ago, probably he is an abandoned hunting dog. He was about 1 year old then, very thin and extremely scared. Ares was taken in by a lady who immediately took a liking to him. Unfortunately she could not care for him and so he was brought to the small shelter. Ares is healthy, vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. He was born in October 2018. Personality. Ares is an extremely kind, loyal, affectionate and calm dog. Everyone at the animal shelter who has ever looked into his dark brown eyes is sold. Ares initially keeps his distance. His fear is not completely gone, but thanks to the arrival of family, friends and volunteers at the shelter, his trust in people has grown greatly over the last year. He first looks at the cat from the tree, but after that he is the biggest cuddler in the animal shelter. Ares goes out for a walk every morning for an hour. He runs up the mountain with two other dogs and enjoys running and sniffing. After an hour he has had enough, stands by the gate, barks a few times with his characteristic bark and wants to go back inside. We are looking for a quiet place for Ares without small children. He is still startled by sudden movements and raised voices (he is therefore familiar with children). Ares can live well with other dogs and cats! Walking in a busy area is exciting for him, meeting new people is also at first. But with a little patience and guidance, Ares will grow even more into the best companion a owner could wish for. With some attention from these new owners, his eyes will shine!

NL·Show original

Ares, gecastreerde reu, 7 jaar, buitenland. Achtergrond. Karakter.

About Ares

What life with Ares looks like

Ares is a extra-large adult dog waiting at Stichting AAI in Amsterdam.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ares, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ares?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stichting AAI handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ares on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ares if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Stichting AAI will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ares already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ares isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stichting AAI early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ares and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
