Atlas
Mixed Breed · Unknown · Baby · 4 months
Atlas is a lovely young dog who combines a wonderfully gentle personality with all the playful enthusiasm you would expect from a puppy. He is a medium sized boy, roughly comparable in size to a smaller Labrador, making him a substantial dog without being particularly large. What makes Atlas especially appealing, however, is his temperament. He has a very submissive nature and is a gentle, friendly character who gets along beautifully with the people and animals around him. Atlas is excellent with other dogs. His easygoing personality makes him a promising candidate for a home with an existing canine family member, particularly one who enjoys the company of other dogs and would be comfortable sharing their space with a playful youngster. He is not a dog who appears interested in challenging everyone around him. Instead, he tends to take a more yielding approach to social interactions. While this can make him easy to get along with, his future family should also make sure that his gentle nature is respected. A submissive dog should never be expected to tolerate uncomfortable situations simply because he is unlikely to object. He would benefit from positive experiences with other dogs who have good social manners and are happy to interact without overwhelming him. Atlas is also great with cats. This is a particularly lovely quality for families who already have feline members, as Atlas has demonstrated that he can get along with them. Of course, any introduction to unfamiliar cats should still be managed carefully, with the cats given plenty of space and opportunities to retreat if they wish. He is also wonderful with children. His gentle personality and positive experiences around children make him a lovely candidate for family life. As with any dog, interactions should be supervised, and children should be taught to respect his personal space, particularly when he is resting or eating. Atlas is currently living in a foster home in the UK, which is another important advantage for prospective adopters. Being in foster care gives him the opportunity to experience ordinary household routines and allows his carers to observe his personality in a home environment. It also means that potential adopters can learn more about how he behaves in everyday situations rather than relying entirely on observations from a kennel environment. And one thing his foster home has already discovered is that Atlas has a rather entertaining hobby. He likes stealing clothes. Not because he has any particular interest in fashion, but because, in Atlas’s opinion, clothing makes an excellent toy. If something has been left within reach, there is a reasonable chance that Atlas will decide it deserves a more exciting purpose. Socks, shirts and other items of clothing may therefore need to be kept safely out of his reach while he learns which things belong to him and which things belong to his humans. This is a fairly typical behaviour for a playful young dog, but it is something his future family should be prepared to manage. Providing plenty of appropriate toys, rewarding him for choosing his own belongings and teaching a reliable exchange or release cue will help him develop better habits. It is important not to turn stolen clothing into an exciting chasing game, as this can accidentally encourage the very behaviour his adopters are trying to prevent. Instead, positive training and sensible management will help Atlas understand that his toys are much more rewarding than the contents of the laundry basket. His playful personality is a wonderful part of his character. Atlas enjoys having fun and will benefit from a family who appreciates that he is still young and has plenty of energy to use. Regular walks, opportunities to explore, games and interactive activities will all be important for his physical and mental wellbeing. Although he is gentle and submissive, that does not mean he is a particularly inactive dog. He still has the enthusiasm of a youngster and needs appropriate outlets for his energy. Atlas would benefit from daily exercise combined with opportunities to sniff, investigate his surroundings and engage in activities that encourage him to think. Training can also become an enjoyable part of his routine. He is at a stage of life when continuing to establish good habits will be especially valuable. Lead manners, recall, settling calmly indoors, responding to basic instructions and learning appropriate household boundaries are all useful skills to develop. His future family should use patient, reward based methods that encourage him to learn confidently. Because Atlas has a particularly submissive personality, it is important that training helps build his confidence rather than making him worried about getting things wrong. Clear expectations, consistency and positive reinforcement will allow him to develop trust and understand what is being asked of him. As he matures, Atlas may also go through the normal behavioural changes associated with adolescence. Young dogs can become more curious, independent and easily distracted as they grow. His adopters should be prepared for this stage and understand that continued training is part of raising a well adjusted adult dog. His current foster placement provides a useful foundation, but moving to a new family will still be a significant change. Atlas will need time to become familiar with his new home, establish a routine and learn where everything belongs. His new family should be prepared to reinforce household manners and toileting routines as needed, even if he has already made progress in foster care. A predictable daily routine will help him settle, particularly during the first few weeks. Atlas could suit a range of households. A family with children could be a lovely possibility, given his positive interactions with them. He could also potentially live with other friendly dogs or cats, provided introductions are handled appropriately. Equally, he could enjoy being the only dog in a household where he receives plenty of human attention, exercise and opportunities to socialise. The most important consideration is finding people who appreciate both sides of his personality. Atlas is gentle and affectionate, but he is also playful, curious and still learning. He needs a family who will enjoy his enthusiasm rather than become frustrated when he occasionally decides that a forgotten sock is the most exciting thing in the house. His submissive temperament should be met with kindness and understanding, and his playful behaviour should be guided through training rather than punishment. Atlas has already made an important step towards finding his permanent home by arriving in the UK and settling into foster care. He is now ready for a family who will appreciate his wonderful nature and continue helping him grow into a confident, happy adult dog. With his friendly attitude towards dogs, cats and children, his gentle personality and his entertaining puppy habits, Atlas has so much to offer. He may occasionally rearrange the laundry, but he is also the sort of dog who could become a much loved part of everyday family life, joining in with walks, games and all the ordinary moments that make sharing a home with a dog so enjoyable.
