Ava

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Ava is a dog with a big heart who has come a long way. Ava was rescued in 2022 from the Uricani kill shelter in Romania. She was estimated to have been born in September 2018 and has been living in a loving foster home in Hillegom for 9 months now. There, she has learned a lot and shown how much potential she has. Ava is a sturdy, medium-sized lady of about 48 cm and 23 kg. To the people she trusts, she is incredibly sweet, enthusiastic and affectionate. She walks nicely on a leash, is well-trained and is enjoying her life in the Netherlands more and more. Ava is pack-oriented and thrives when she has a dog companion around her. In her foster home, she is crazy about the male dog: playing, running and going on adventures together is her favorite activity. A stable, playful dog would therefore fit her very well. She also gets along well with cats in the house. We see more and more of the cheerful Ava coming out. Going to the park or the beach with the other dogs is great for her and she loves running and discovering. She even seems to find water interesting. Ava does have a small backpack. Some things are still exciting for her, such as men coming straight at her, waving flags or suddenly moving objects. At such moments, she needs her safe environment and someone who can guide her calmly. With patience, predictability and trust, she continues to make beautiful steps. And maybe that's the most beautiful thing about Ava: you can see her grow. What was still exciting a month ago, can suddenly be okay today. She has shown that she wants to learn and that there is a very nice dog in her. Ava is looking for a quiet and stable home with someone who is often at home, likes to walk and gives her the time to build trust. A crate is nothing for her; Ava would rather lie on the couch, close to her people or another dog. ❤️ Ava is chipped, vaccinated, sterilized, dewormed and has a European passport. She has been given a second chance. Now we hope that her third chapter begins: a home of her own, where she can stay forever. Who finally gives sweet Ava her own bed?

Lieve Ava! Wie geeft lieve Ava eindelijk haar eigen mand?

About Ava

What life with Ava looks like

Ava is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Stichting Dogs on a Journey in Netherlands.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ava, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ava?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stichting Dogs on a Journey handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ava on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ava if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Stichting Dogs on a Journey will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Ava already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ava isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stichting Dogs on a Journey early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ava and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
