Balou

German Shepherd · Male · Young · 3 years

Weight: approx. 43 kg | Shoulder height: approx. 63 cm Balou is a handsome German Shepherd who came to our shelter as a confiscated animal and is now ready to move into a suitable home. He’s looking for people with dog experience who appreciate his strengths but can also provide him with the necessary security and guidance in everyday life. With strangers, Balou sometimes needs a bit of time to build trust. However, once the ice is broken, you’ll have a loyal and devoted companion by your side who loves spending time with his trusted humans. Toward those he knows well, Balou is cooperative and allows himself to be brushed or handled without any issues. But things are different when it comes to veterinary examinations: these pose a special challenge for him, which is why, for his own safety and to protect everyone involved, he must be muzzled during such visits. As typical for a German Shepherd, Balou is attentive and alert. He reliably alerts you whenever he hears something or notices anything unusual. He thoroughly enjoys walks and loves going out with his people. Balou travels comfortably in the car and shows no fuss at all during car rides. After an appropriate adjustment period and sufficient mental and physical stimulation, he should also be able to spend several hours alone without any problems. So far, Balou has shown only limited compatibility with other dogs. For this reason, we’d like him to have a single-dog home where he doesn’t have to share his owners’ attention with other dogs. Cats, small pets, and children should also not live in his new home. Dog encounters can still be challenging for Balou, especially when they occur at close range. In such situations, he sometimes reacts quite strongly and will continue to need consistent training and confident leadership. That’s why Balou is always walked on leash with a muzzle outside our premises. He wears the muzzle without any difficulty and it never spoils his good mood during walks. A particular issue for Balou is his strong object fixation. Sticks and other items he finds exert a great attraction on him, and he eagerly collects them along the way. Once Balou has acquired such a “treasure,” he doesn’t always give it up voluntarily. Additionally, he displays resource guarding behavior toward food and toys, so his new owners should be aware of this and learn how to manage it appropriately. We’re looking for a calm, dog-experienced home for Balou—a home where clear routines and fair, confident handling are taken for granted. People who enjoy working with their dog and providing him with meaningful physical and mental stimulation will find in Balou a loyal and characterful companion. If you’re interested in this dog or have any questions, please feel free to send us an email with your phone number and a brief description of yourself.

About Balou

What life with Balou looks like

Balou is a large young adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
