Balu

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

The imposing male dog Balu arrived at our animal shelter in early December 2025 as a found animal. He was tied to a construction fence, not far from our animal shelter, and we received numerous clues about Balus’s previous life from earlier trusted people who recognized him on social media. He unfortunately passed through many hands before finally coming to us due to the last owner’s overburden. Originally from Romania, he is now approximately eight years old. At first, he was unsure at our animal shelter, and reports from his past indicate that he is sensitive to various situations, with instances of biting behavior. However, he is already familiar with the muzzle and allows it to be put on without issue. Initially, Balu is reserved and skeptical around new people, so a long getting-to-know-you phase will be necessary. He responds very positively to clear, structured guidance; he listens to basic commands and is leash-trained, though training is still needed in some situations. In a stable environment, he shows himself to be very cooperative and friendly. With his primary caregiver, he is also quite clingy and affectionate. He is familiar with living with other dogs and even with cats. We know that Balu is not without his challenges, but we are convinced that he can become a great companion for dog-experienced people who can read and understand his behavior. We wish to find a home for the power pack where he can live as close to ground level as possible, ideally on a property with family connections. Whether his living with children will be harmonious, we do not know. However, his adopters should give him the structure he needs to properly assess situations, allowing for a harmonious coexistence. The behavior in a family setting may therefore differ from the descriptions provided.

About Balu

What life with Balu looks like

Balu is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Zwickau in Zwickau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Zwickau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Zwickau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Zwickau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
