Barney

Dachshund · Unknown

Barney EAST MIDLANDS Adoption fee £250 East Midlands 5 years Brindle Smooth Coat Miniature (5kg) Not Neutered Barney is a truly lovely boy with a big heart and a love for cuddles. This affectionate little chap adores being close to his people and, once he knows you, will reward you with unwavering loyalty and companionship. He can be a little wary when meeting new people, but he simply needs a bit of time and patience to feel safe. Once he warms up, his loving nature really shines through and he becomes a devoted best friend. Barney enjoys a relaxed and happy lifestyle. He loves pottering around in the garden and soaking up the sunshine, but equally enjoys getting out for walks and having a good run around. He has good recall when out and about but can be reactive towards other dogs and will therefore need an understanding and mindful family. Earlier this year, Barney had symptoms of IVDD and this was managed with medication and rest. He is now doing well. He was previously treated for pancreatitis thought to be brought on by a food allergy and now enjoys a chicken and turkey free diet. Barney is looking for a calm, quiet home where he can feel safe and settled. He would be best suited to an adult only household, or one with older, dog-savvy children who understand his need for space when settling in. Barney needs a home where his people are around all of the time as he becomes very anxious when left alone. Barney would also benefit from living with a calm (spayed) female dachshund companion. Barney is a wonderful boy and with a little time, patience, and understanding, he will become a loyal and loving friend for life. Requirements in a home: Someone who is home most of the time Can live with a calm female spayed dachshund pending a successful meet Can live with older dog savvy children Cannot live with cats For more information please email

About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a large adult dachshund dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
